The Power of Prayer and What We Carry

There is a story told of a monk who was asked how he prayed without ceasing, as Paul commands in 1 Thessalonians. He smiled and held up his prayer rope, a simple cord with knots, worn around his wrist. "Every knot is a prayer," he said. "I carry my prayers with me."

The idea that physical objects can anchor us to prayer is not superstition. It is wisdom. We are embodied creatures. We think and feel and remember through our bodies. What we carry on our bodies can shape what we carry in our hearts.

The Command to Pray Without Ceasing

"Pray without ceasing." — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

It is one of the most challenging commands in all of Scripture. How do you pray without ceasing when you have a job, a family, a to-do list, a phone that never stops buzzing?

The answer, most spiritual directors will tell you, is not to pray longer. It is to pray more often. To cultivate a habit of turning toward God in the small moments. The commute. The waiting room. The moment before a difficult conversation. The pause between tasks.

This is what the ancient church called the practice of the presence of God, the discipline of remaining aware, in the midst of ordinary life, that you are always in the presence of the One who made you and loves you.

Physical reminders help. They interrupt the autopilot of daily life and call you back to what is true.

What Objects Do

We are not Gnostics. We do not believe that the physical world is inferior to the spiritual. We believe that God entered the physical world, took on flesh, walked on earth, touched lepers, broke bread, and in doing so, sanctified it.

Physical objects can carry spiritual meaning. Not because the objects themselves are magical, but because of what they represent and what they prompt in us.

A cross pendant catches the light and you remember: I am loved. I am held. I am not alone.

A scripture bracelet slides down your wrist as you reach for your phone and you pause: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." And instead of scrolling, you breathe. You pray.

A ring engraved with a verse catches your eye in a moment of anxiety and you remember the promise: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you."

These are not coincidences. They are the fruit of intentional practice, of choosing to surround yourself with reminders of what is true.

Building a Life of Prayer

If you want to pray more, start with your environment. What do you see when you wake up? What do you carry with you through the day? What catches your eye in moments of stress or distraction?

Create anchors. A cross pendant you wear every day. A verse on your wrist. A small icon on your desk. These are anchors, physical points that tether you to the spiritual reality you want to inhabit.

Use transitions. The moments between activities are natural prayer moments. When you get in the car, when you sit down at your desk, when you walk into a meeting, these transitions are opportunities. A quick touch of your cross pendant, a whispered prayer, a breath of gratitude.

Pray with your hands. There is something powerful about praying with your hands on a physical object, holding a cross pendant, running your fingers along a bracelet. It engages your body in the prayer, not just your mind.

Let beauty draw you. A piece of jewelry you love, that you find genuinely beautiful, will draw your attention more than one you merely tolerate. Choose pieces that you want to look at, that catch the light in ways that delight you. Beauty is not vanity. Beauty is a gift from God, and it can draw us toward him.
